A large part of the quality of the specimen depends on the care of the specimen after it’s been harvested. Different animals have characteristics that require different types of attention. It is preferred that every specimen should be frozen at delivery to the taxidermist.
Bag & freeze the bird. The trophy bird should be kept separately from other birds, do not lay other birds on top of it. The body heat from multiple birds accumulates and promotes bacterial activity and can cause damage. Do not use pantyhose to wrap the bird! The pantyhose causes irreversible damage to the feathers.
For skin mounts simply bag and freeze the fish. For reproductions lots of pictures, weight, and total length and girth measurements are best.
Deer and other fur-bearers should be frozen as soon as possible. Do not ride your trophy around all day to show it off! Time, heat, and water all cause damage to the skin and can cause slippage - the hair/fur will slip off the skin! For deer, the front 1/2 of the hide is needed, cut the legs at the bend in the knee.
